AkronMan killedAKRON: An Akron man was shot Sunday afternoon on the city’s near east side.Demetrion Wilson, 20, of Day Street, died at 4:27 p.m. at Summa Akron City Hospital, where he was taken after a fight in the 700 block of Day Street. An arrest warrant has been issued for Terrance P. Minor Jr., 28, on a charge of aggravated murder. His last known address is Clifford Avenue in Akron. Minor is accused of shooting Wilson in the chest after an altercation outside the victim’s home. Anyone with information on Minor’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Akron Police Department at 330-375-2490 or the U.S. Marshals Service at 866-4-WANTED. Callers can remain anonymous. Two shotAKRON: Akron police say two people were shot early Sunday outside a bar.Police were called around 2 a.m. to the parking lot of Uncle Ricky’s Bar at 1527 E. Market St. and found two gunshot victims.One was shot in the abdomen while the other suffered a gunshot wound in the leg. They were taken to Summa Akron City Hospital for treatment.No details of their injuries or what may have led to the shooting were released. Merger finalAKRON: The Center for Nonprofit Excellence in Akron has merged with Business Volunteers Unlimited of Cleveland.Beginning today, the two nonprofit groups are one organization known as BVU: The Center for Nonprofit Excellence, with offices in downtown Akron and Cleveland.The Center for Nonprofit Excellence, a nonprofit itself, was founded in Akron a decade ago to help other organizations raise money, write proposals, develop budgets and work with volunteers.Cleveland’s nonprofit Business Volunteers United (BVU) was established in 1993, and has focused on “board matching,” finding and training business professionals for nonprofit boards. It also promotes leadership through volunteer projects and offers seminars and consulting to nonprofits.The new organization will operate with its current combined staff of 19 full- and part-time employees in Akron and Cleveland.Theresa Proenza has been named regional vice president in the Akron office.Proenza, wife of University of Akron President Luis Proenza, was named CNE’s interim executive director earlier this year. She previously was a member of the nonprofit’s board of directors. She has been involved with other civic, arts, legal and educational organizations.bath townshipPayments approvedBATH TWP.: Trustees have approved payments of nearly $308,000.Service Director Bob Wilson said the summer resurfacing programs accounts for most of the payments.Karvo Paving Co. received approval for their bill of $204,322.44 through the countywide bidding program, while Lytle Construction, Inc. will be paid $93,288.01. Both projects were part of the township’s pavement maintenance program.In addition, trustees approved the payment of $100,792.30 to Schalmo Builders Inc. for the Ira Road Service Facility renovation. The project is nearly completed with only landscaping and the demolition of a small building, at a cost estimate of $14,108, yet to be completed. In other Service Department news, Bath will advertise for bids in the next two weeks to replace two boilers in the Bath Center Office Complex. For information or tickets, call 330-212-0803.STARK COUNTYTaxes collectedCANTON: Stark County has collected $1.8 million in delinquent real-estate taxes this year, reducing the $40 million total owed at the beginning of the year.The amount represents an increase over the nearly $1.3 million recovered in 2010.A cooperative effort of the offices of the treasurer, auditor and prosecutor resulted in the opening of 398 foreclosure cases this year, compared to 301 last year.“A lot of them are coming in, paying in full,” said Charles Roska, deputy treasurer. “A lot of them are going on payment plans.”He said some of the payments are from homeowners qualifying for a tax reduction because they are disabled or over 65 years of age.Most of the delinquent tax payments, about $1 million, have been full payments. Sheriff’s sales brought in $567,620. Another $206,413 was paid on contracts.The delinquent tax collection team has a goal of filing 1,000 foreclosure cases this year.Some of the accounts are believed to be uncollectible because they date back up to 50 years. In many cases, no owner can be located.Roska said efforts are being concentrated on accounts most likely to be paid.SUMMIT COUNTYCredit-card theftGREEN: A former Fairfield Inn employee was arrested after Summit County sheriff’s deputies said he and a female accomplice used a corporate card to steal more than $30,000 at a Sandusky hotel.Michael McKoy of Akron was charged with felony theft and misuse of a credit card, the sheriff’s office said in a news release Monday.Latoria Johnson of Akron, a former employee of the hotel who is accused of being McKoy’s accomplice, remains at large.Summit County deputies launched an investigation after the general manager of the Fairfield Inn, 1025 Interstate Parkway in Green, reported that someone gained access to the hotel credit card and bought $30,000 worth of merchandise in less than one month from Castaway Bay Hotel in Sandusky.The sheriff’s office contacted the Cedar Point Police Department, which assisted in the investigation.McKoy was booked into the Summit County Jail.A warrant for felony theft was filed for Johnson through Barberton Municipal Court.Tire collectionSTOW: The Summit-Akron Solid Waste Management Authority will collect tires on Saturday. Hours are 9 to 11 a.m. at the county’s closed Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Center, 1201 Graham Road, Stow. The fee is $1 per tire with a limit of 10 tires per vehicle. Passenger, light truck, motorcycle and small trailer tires will be accepted. Tires can be on or off rims.Tires from businesses will not be accepted.The collection is open only to Summit County residents.No household toxic wastes will be accepted.For information about the collection effort, call 330-374-0383 or go online to www.saswma.org. wadsworthStore robbedWADSWORTH: Wadsworth police are looking for the gunman who robbed the Goodwill Industries shop on Great Oaks Trail.The store was robbed about 9:15 p.m. on Friday. There were no injuries reported. Details of the robbery were not released.The man, who wore baggy clothing and a hooded sweatshirt and red pants, was last seen running from the rear of the store, police said.Anyone with information is asked to call Wadsworth police at 330-334-1511. Anonymous tips about potential suspects may be left via voicemail at 330-335-2769.
